Welcome to our “Wonders of the World Week” an at home week filled with days of relaxed learning and fun activities all themed to a few of the new wonders of the world! Part history, part cultural studies, this week was definitely a thrilling, whirlwind adventure as we “traveled” to a different Wonder each day, learning a bit about the man-made construction, time period, and culture of each magnificent structure. We did not have time to study each wonder (and we did sneak in a few runner ups) but it was an awe-inspiring week that fueled many more questions and self study! Read on to check out the fun!
DAY ONE: An Introductory Day
Like most of our at home camp weeks, we kicked off the week by easing into the topic with an introductory day. We started off with setting up the camp area with some large world wide maps – this gave us a good idea of where we are as well as where some of these new wonders are! Then we set up our own “voting campaign” to determine what our friends and family would consider the Wonders of the World! Click here to check out full details of the day!
DAY TWO: The Great Wall of China
After our introductory day, we turned first to the Great Wall of China! We learned about where the Great Wall is, why it was constructed, how it was built, and more! The Great Wall of China is so famous that your little ones may have already heard of it. Spanning thousands of miles, built over centuries, and standing still today, it’s no surprise it made the final list of the New Wonders of the World! Click here to check out full details of the day!
DAY THREE: The Colosseum
Our next wonder that we turned to was the Colosseum! We learned about where the Colosseum is, why it was constructed, what events took place within it, how it was built, and more! It’s a massive, grand structure built in Ancient Rome, offering thousands of Romans a chance to witness marvelous spectacles and entertainment! It is a mathematical wonder, an architectural feat, and still stands today! Click here to check out full details of the day!
DAY FOUR: MOAI Statues
Our next wonder is not actually one of the official seven, but it was one of the finalists – the Easter Island Statues! The stone statues, or Moai, of Easter Island are so fascinating that we couldn’t pass them up on our Wonders of the World week. Constructed by the ancient Rapu Nui people, these massive statues were carved out of rock formed from the volcano’s eruption and then moved manually to the coast of the island! It was a thoroughly engaging day as we learned all about volcano tuff, statues, and the creativity and ingenuity of these ancient people! Click here to check out full details of the day!
DAY FIVE: Stonehenge
Our final wonder is not actually one of the official seven, but it was one of the finalists – Stonehenge! Stonehenge has captured the imaginations of so many – featured in several books and set as the backdrop to so many King Arthur and Merlin movies, our little ones were no stranger to this famous structure! But, aside from knowing generally what Stonehenge looks like, they didn’t really know too much about the history, construction, or theories on the purpose of it! So, while it’s not actually one of the seven wonders of the world, we could not pass up a day to spend learning all about it! Click here to check out full details of the day!
FINISH OFF THE WEEK
While it would be absolutely amazing to see a Wonder of the World in person, it may not be as feasible for many of us. Luckily, many museums have exhibits or at least small mentions of a few of these wonders (and finalists)! Otherwise, there are TONS of movies that have these wonders as their backdrops! Make it a movie night and try to spot the wonders! 🙂
