A SNOW MUCH FUN DAY!
Welcome to our collection of Winter Learning Fun – a collection of relaxed and fun activities for winter-themed learning plans, snowed in days, or just plan learning fun! For this day, we concentrated on SNOW! We read through books about snowflakes, watched a few online videos, snacked on some “snowflakes”, and performed a few science experiments. Read on to check out the details!
A TYPICAL DAY
All kids are different and you can definitely vary your day with whatever works for you 🙂 But the gist of our day having our kiddos focus on some work books or online learning tools in the early morning, an intro to the day’s theme after they were done, some videos around lunch time, and themed activities (reading time, writing time, crafts, food crafts/snacks, and games or experiments) in the afternoon. Feel free to pick and choose whatever works for you 🙂
WHAT TO WATCH
For our video of the day, we watched a few videos that explained how snowflakes form.
FOOD CRAFTS / SNACKS
For our snack of the day, we were able to pick up some snowflake crackers (these are a seasonal item), so if you’re studying snowflakes during the summer, you might not be able to find them. We also created some veggie straw snowflakes 🙂
READING
Reading is not just an important part of learning, it can also be fun if you pick the right books and theme! For our book of the day, we picked a non-fiction book that explained how snowflakes are formed and the different types of shapes they can be. Then we asked our kiddos what the most interesting part of the book was for them.
- The Story of Snow: The Science of Winter’s Wonder by Jon Nelson Ph.D. Mark Cassino
WRITING & WRITING PROMPTS
Just like reading, writing is a great way to practice both their creative skills as well as their writing and penmanship.
If you’ve got a little one, have them trace words related to the theme: SNOW, SNOWFLAKE
If you’ve got older children, have them write a sentence or two up to a page or two (depending on their age). Encourage them to be creative AND give reasons for why they made certain choices.
- Imagine you were a snowflake falling from the sky! Where would you fall, a small town, a backyard? Write your story!
CRAFTS
For our craft of the day, we kept it quite simple with some crafts that you may have already created (I know we have 🙂 ). We created snowflakes using pipe cleaners and pony beads as well as snowflakes from paper.
STEM ACTIVITY
For our science activity, we performed two experiments: snowflake crystals and fizzing snowmen!
First, we created some borax snowflakes. We’ve followed this activity for another learning fun day on the study of rocks and minerals, so we knew it’d be a hit. For this day, we had them shape the pipe cleaners into snowflakes. The solution we used worked very quickly, so we had some crystal snowflakes within the hour!
Our second experiment was a bit messier: fizzing snowman (but so much fun it’s on our list to repeat). It’s a bit like the exploding volcano experiment using baking soda and vinegar with the added fun of shaping the baking soda into snow people. We found the tutorial on littlebinsforlittlehands.com: Melting Snowman. It definitely has that “ooh” and “ahh” factor 🙂
