Welcome to our “Out of this World Space Week” series – an at home summer camp filled with days of relaxed learning and fun themed activities focusing on oh-so-cool outer space! This one was actually spread out a little over a week, so we had a few more days to play – we learned all about our solar system, the moon, astronauts, telescopes, and constellations.
Read through to check out our ideas on ways to decorate your camp area, find links to interactive online games, fun & educational videos, books – fiction and non-fiction, writing prompts or story telling ideas, science experiments, food crafts & snacks, and kid-friendly crafts all themed for the week!
DAY ONE: An Introduction to Space Week
Like most of our at home camp weeks, we kicked off the week by easing into the topic. We started off with decorating the camp area (which actually cleverly used some of the math and measurement skills ;)). Then we had a few cosmic snacks and designed some galactic eggs. Like all days, we added in some interesting books and some writing / story telling prompts. Click here to check out full details of the day!
DAY TWO: Our Sensational Solar System
For this day, we learned all about the solar system by reading some fun fact books, watching some educational videos, making some easy crafts, and performing some stem activities! Click here to check out full details of the day!
DAY THREE: The Marvelous Moon
For this day, we learned all about the moon using fun activities – reading a cute fiction book as well as a nonfiction one, watching some educational videos, and performing a fun (though very messy) experiment! Click here to check out full details of the day!
DAY FOUR: An Awesome Astronaut Day
For this day, we learned all about the astronauts interesting books, watching some videos of actual astronauts in space reading science and engineering books for kids, writing our own stories, and following some activities straight from NASA! Click here to check out full details of the day!
DAY FIVE: Terrific Telescopes
For this day, we learned all about telescopes by reading some non-fiction book and checking out some of the star-gazing activities in another one. We also watched some educational videos, writing our own stories, and created two types of ‘telescopes’: a paper towel tube craft and an actual one (though not powerful at all) from a kit. Click here to check out full details of the day!
DAY SIX: Constellation Day
For this day, we learned all about the constellations by reading some fun non-fiction books, creating some ‘constellations’ of our own, adding some stories to those constellations, and making star finders. Click here to check out full details of the day!
FINISH OFF THE WEEK
As you may be able to tell, space week was definitely action packed and filled with some super-fun and engaging space-themed activities that helped keep the kids excited about learning! If you’ve got a planetarium or a science museum with a space exhibit, it may be fun to take the kiddos out for a trip to round out the week! Otherwise, you could also take them stargazing (there are quite a few apps out there that help identify what some of those celestial objects are). If instead you’re fully exhausted by the end of the week, there are TONS of space themed (and kid-friendly) movies that you can pick from for a family movie night!
