Welcome to our “Rocking Rock Research! – An Amazing DIY at Home Camp Week” series. For this week, we focused on the study of rocks, minerals, gemstones, and more! Read through to check out how to ways to decorate your camp area, links to interactive online games, fun & educational videos, books, writing prompts, experiments, food crafts & snacks, and kid-friendly crafts all themed for the week!
Feel free to pick certain days or follow the entire week – as long as it gets the kiddos to keep learning while they’re having an amazing time!
DAY ONE: Orientation Day – What are Rocks?
For Day One of our Rock Week At Home Camp, we used a few kits – a rock science kit and a rock painting kit, read a few books, and followed a very tasty explanation of geology using ice cream & snacks 🙂 Click here for full details of the day.
DAY TWO: Mineral Merriment
For Day 2, we focused on minerals. We read through and watched a few online videos, created some geological snacks, and performed a simple science experiment. Click here for full details of the day!
DAY THREE: Geodes Galore!
For Day 3, we focused on oh-so-cool geodes! We read through and watched a few online videos, created some snacks, painted some geodes, and performed a science experiment. Click here for full details of the day!
DAY FOUR: A Magnificent Meteorite Day
What’s cooler than a cool looking rock? How about a cool looking rock that came from space! For Day 4, we focused on meteorites! We read through and watched a few online videos, created some snacks, crafted our own meteorites, and performed a science experiment. Click here for full details of the day.
DAY FIVE: A Day with Gorgeous Gemstones
All that sparkles! For our final day of rock week, we focused on gemstones! We learned the different types of gemstones, examined a few, created some “jewelry” snacks, “unearthed” a few of our own! Click here for full details of the day!
FINISH OFF THE WEEK:
What an amazing week learning all about rocks, minerals, and gemstones! If you’ve got a museum in the area with rocks & minerals, it might be a great way to finish off the week. Otherwise, build up that rock collection by taking walks around some rocky areas 🙂
