Welcome to our “Prehistoric Sea Creatures Week” – an at home camp filled with days of relaxed learning and fun themed activities all themed to oh-so-fascinating Prehistoric Sea Creatures! Many of us are fascinating by the long-extinct dinosaurs (we’ve even had a week dedicated to them a while back in our Digging Up Dinosaur Discoveries Week as well as some parties: EPIC Dinosaur Party), but what about the stunning creatures who swam the waters just as long ago?? They are just as awe-inspiring and worthy of some learning fun!
For this week, we dove into exploring stunning sea monsters from the prehistoric times! While there are sooo many oh-so-cool prehistoric sea creatures to study, we picked a handful that we wanted to learn more about for the week. Each day we focused on a different sea creature each day: a terrifying massive shark that sparks imagination – the Megalodon, an equally terrifying sea creature who actually made a brief appearance in a very popular dinosaur movie – the Mosasaur, an adorable sea monster bearing resemblance to a mythical sea creature – the Plesiosaurs, and a prehistoric turtle – Archaeon.
Read through to check out our ideas on ways to decorate your camp area, find links to fun & educational videos, books – fiction and non-fiction, writing prompts or story telling ideas, science experiments, food crafts & snacks, and kid-friendly crafts all themed for the week!
DAY ONE: An Introductory Day
Like most of our at home camp weeks, we kicked off the week by easing into the topic. For our first day, we had an overview of what prehistoric sea creature is and how they are different from dinosaurs. We decorated our camp area with some blue tissue and added a few cut outs of prehistoric sea creature coloring sheets. Then we introduced our weeklong project – a Field Journal, used to collect information on they prehistoric sea creatures we learned about each day! Click here to check out full details of the day!
DAY TWO: Megalodon Day
Sharks have always captured the imagination of kids (and adults!), so it’s no surprise that we spent a day on this MASSIVE prehistoric shark! In addition to learning interesting facts about the Megalodon, we had a few activities which clearly showed how much larger their teeth were as well as their entire jaw! The day was eye-opening, perhaps a little terrifying, but definitely a nice way to keep kids learning and engaged! Click here to check out full details of the day!
DAY THREE: Mosasaur Day
Look! Is it a crocodile? An alligator? A snack? No – it’s a Mosasaur!!! For the Day 3, we turned our attention to the Mosasaur family – a group of aquatic lizards who ruled the seas as apex predators. We read books, watched a few videos, and even tried to find the mosasaur in a very popular movie. We also unearthed an actual mosasaur tooth and added to our prehistoric creature wall and field journal. Click here to check out full details of the day!
DAY FOUR: Plesiosaur Day
The plesiosaur has always been a favorite over here! With it’s long neck and powerful jaws, it’s truly an amazing sea creature! For this day, we created some adorable plesiosaur crafts and built some puzzles! Click here to check out full details of the day!
DAY FIVE: Archelon Day
Last but never least, we turned out attention to the amazing, ancient turtle – the Archelon. For this day, we had a number of turtle themed activities while we learned all about this massive, prehistoric turtle. Click here to check out full details of the day!
FINISH OFF THE WEEK!
Fortunately there is quite a bit of information out there on prehistoric sea creatures – and the scientific findings keep growing day by day! If you’re lucky, you may even live by a museum that has a few fossils of prehistoric sea creatures on display! If so, a great way to finish off the week would be to head on over for a field trip! Otherwise, you can always check online for any virtual exhibits on display!
