An Amazing Ocean Week at Home – Ocean Exploration: Myths & Legends

A DAY WITH THE MERMAIDS & MYTHICAL SEA CREATURES

Welcome to our “Ocean Week – DIY At Home Dive Into Ocean Learning” series.  For the last day of our Ocean Week, we turned to a familiar favorite topic: Mermaids! (And added some mythical creatures in there too 😉   Read through for ideas on some online resources, videos, books, crafts, a stem activity, and more!

A TYPICAL DAY

Camp Schedule

All kids are different and you can definitely vary your day with whatever works for you 🙂   But the gist of our day having our kiddos focus on some work books or online learning tools in the early morning, an intro to the day’s theme after they were done, some videos around lunch time, and themed activities (reading time, writing time, crafts, food crafts/snacks, and games or experiments) in the afternoon.  Feel free to pick and choose whatever works for you 🙂

INTRO

If your household is anything like mine, mermaids need no introduction 🙂  Instead, we asked our kids to write down all the facts they knew about mermaids and draw a few pictures.

WHAT TO WATCH

There are quite a few very popular mermaid videos & movies out there but if you’re looking for a video with a different sea creature, here are few options:

  • Song of the Sea (2014) – the mythical creature in this one is a Selkie.  It’s different from a typical Disney Mermaid movie, but enjoyable as well.
  • Water Horse: Legend of the Deep See (2007) – yep, you guessed it 😉 It’s about a mythical sea creature, a water horse.

FOOD CRAFTS / SNACKS

For our themed portion of snack time, we followed a recipe to create Magical Mermaid Lemonade. The colors are only limited by what ingredients you have on hand, which means you can make different versions over and over 🙂

READING

Ocean Camp – Mermaid Book

It’s no secret that reading helps prevent that summer slide. Some even say this is the most important.  For our reading portion of the day, there was more than enough excitement around this mermaid book (with sequins on its front cover)

  • Mermaid Mia and the Royal Visit by Rosie Greening – Mermaids + Flip Sequins = Check & Check 🙂

WRITING & WRITING PROMPTS

Just like reading, writing helps prevent that summer slide by both encouraging their creativity but also their motor skills and penmanship.

If you’ve got a little one, have them trace words related to the theme: SEA, OCEAN, MERMAID, etc.

If you’ve got older children, have them write a sentence or two up to a page or two (depending on their age). Encourage them to be creative AND give reasons for why they made certain choices.

  • Create a mini story about a magical sea creature: a mermaid, sea

CRAFTS

There are no shortages of mermaid crafts in this household 🙂  We pulled out a few for the last camp day and also picked up a sewing craft as well:

STEM ACTIVITY

For our stem/science portion of the day, we picked a simple experiment that shows how fish breathe. If you’re a coffee drinker, you’ll likely have all you need as well 🙂 How Do Fish Breath Underwater
