Welcome to our Mythical Mermaid Party! While we’ve had a number of mermaid parties (Little Mermaid, Backyard Mermaid Bash, Beach Mermaid Party) as well as some Mermaid Learning Fun Days (Mythical Creature Mermaid Day, Ocean Themed Mermaid Day), we decided to celebrate the mermaids with a nod to their mythical stories!
Like most of our parties, we tried to keep costs quite low with some DIY decorations, decorated labels and signs, and dollar store items. Read on to check it out!
DECORATIONS
Our decorations were quite simple – we used a lot of basic, solid colors – different shades of blues, pinks, etc. The Dollar Tree also has quite a few ocean and mermaid themed items that you can use as table scatter or additional decorations: seashells, ocean colored sea glass bags, magic growing sea creatures, sea animal craft boards, and solid blue table covers.
If you have any other mermaid toys or books (and don’t mind having them out for the party), they’d be great additions to the party area!
THE PHOTO AREA
Photo backdrops are a great way of setting a theme and double as a nice and easy activity! Pick a backdrop that functions as decorative, add a few props to the scene and you’ve got a great place to hang out!
There are definitely some nice photo backdrops out there to purchase: Sea Mermaid Backdrop, Underwater Coral Shells Backdrop, and many more online!
Otherwise, you could also hang up some plastic blue table covers (or tissue paper), add some sea creatures, and you have a perfect ocean backdrop!
AND if you really want to add more pop to your pictures, set up a mermaid styling station, complete with mermaid accessories (8 Pcs Starfish Hair Clip Sea Shell Hair Clips, Shell Pearl Starfish Hair Clip Set) or some Mermaid Photo Booth Props.
Note, you don’t have to go all out with a photo backdrop stand either. Grab a few pieces of tape and an empty wall & you’re all set!
THE TABLE(S)
With just a few mermaid items, you can set up a perfect party table! We used a lot of blues and pinks to compliment the desert plates.
For each table setting, we created a Paper Favor Box (Favor Box Template by Love Paper Crafts) out of blue construction paper. Then we added a mermaid sticker to give it a mermaid touch 🙂
For our “centerpiece”, we set up some different shades of blue tissue paper. Then we added a print out of a mermaid tail to appear as if a mermaid were diving into the blue water. We also added some mermaid trivia cards for everyone to enjoy and quiz each other during the meal. As a final touch, we scattered some glitter beads
PARTY FOOD
No party is complete without some party food! You can always serve some typical (or fancier) party food, but you can also keep in theme with a few clever labels 🙂
There is no shortage of ocean, nautical, and mermaid themed foods out there! While these are all beautiful, there are some parties that we just keep things simple. For this party, we named a few healthy snacks and mini snack bags to keep in theme.
- Sea Grapes – red & green grapes
- Sea Cucumbers – apples
- Starfish – starfruit
- Sea Creatures – Sea Creature Shaped Cheese and Crackers
- Sea Salt – sea salt anything! Sea Salt Veggie Straws, Sea Salt Chocolate Chip Cookies, Sea Salt Recipes,…
ACTIVITY TABLES
We typically set up an activity table for kids to keep entertained while everyone arrives AND after all the games are done. These activities are simple and easy and typically don’t require too much supervision.
- Wood Shape Painting: Wood shapes are always a quick & easy activity to set up. Paint pens or markers are less messy than actual paint too 😉 If you’re throwing this party around summer, chances are there are some sea themed crafts at the Dollar Tree – similar to the seashell ones we used here 🙂 We also found some mermaid wood cutouts that we used for a Mermaid Learning Fun Day. Otherwise, you can definitely find a few variety packs online (Mermaid Tails)
- Mermaid Puzzle: If you have a puzzle loving group, a table with a puzzle for all to solve a few pieces is always fun!
GAMES
What’s a party without some fun and memorable games??? Kids will definitely have fun just running around and coming up with their own games, BUT adding in a few themed games will definitely be a hit with your guests! Here were a few of ours.
- Mermaid Candle Making: This one is technically a craft vs. a game but it does require adult supervision. We picked up a few Mermaid Candle Kits and had everyone create their own 🙂
- Deck of Cards: Lantern Press Blue Tail Mermaid, Oceanic Mermaid. A deck of cards offers endless fun! Play goldfish or any other fun games they may know 🙂
