Welcome to our “Mythical Creature Week” – an at home camp filled with days of relaxed learning and fun themed activities all themed to oh-so-fascinating Mythical Creatures! For this week, we picked a few favorite creatures and focused on one each day. We learned all about what those creatures were, stories from different areas across the world, and what real creatures may have inspired these mythical counterparts!
This week was sooo popular with our little ones that we’ve gone back to it from time to time to learn about more mythical creatures 🙂
Read through to check out our ideas on ways to decorate your camp area, find links to fun & educational videos, books – fiction and non-fiction, writing prompts or story telling ideas, science experiments, food crafts & snacks, and kid-friendly crafts all themed for the week!
DAY ONE: An Introductory Day
Like most of our at home camp weeks, we kicked off the week by easing into the topic. For our first day, we had an overview of what mythical creatures are and learned about a few of them. We also introduced our weeklong project – a Field Journal, used to collect information on they mythical creatures we learned about each day! Click here to check out full details of the day!
DAY TWO: Dragon Day
Dragon day actually ended up being dragon days 🙂 For day one, went on a fact finding mission to determine if dragons actually existed 😉 And one day two, we focused on the ‘study’ of dragons – what types of different dragons are there, what are their characteristics. DAY THREE: Unicorn Day
Unicorns have long since captured the imaginations of so many! If your little one is just as enthralled by these mystical creatures, then they may just love learning all about them as well! Our unicorn themed learning day focused all on the history of unicorns – where they may have come from, what they symbolized, etc. Then we had a few crafts to bring the unicorn magic home! Click here to check out full details of the day!
DAY FOUR: Kraken Day
Some kids may or not be familiar with this mythical creature – the kraken! Chances are they may be familiar with them if they’re pirate or ocean fans and it may conjure up some scary images! But, for this day, we learned all about what sea creatures may have been mistaken for krakens, what they might actually be, and how similar they are to giant squids! Click here to check out full details of the day!
DAY FIVE: Mermaid Day
If your little one adores mermaids, they may be just as interested to learn a bit of history or mythology through the history and story of mermaids! On our mermaid learning day, we learned all about some stories about mermaids from other countries & cultures, watched some videos on what real creatures mermaids may have been mistaken for, and then finished off our day with some mermaid-themed science experiments and crafts! Click here to check out full details of the day!
DAY SIX: Loch Ness Monster Day
The search for Nessie continues! This adorable, beloved ‘monster’ seems to have captured the hearts of so many 🙂 For this day, we learned all about the history of Nessie, theories on what type of creature she may be, and had an amazing time with loch ness crafts! Click here to check out full details of the day!
DAY SEVEN: Yeti Day
Brrr! If it’s cold outside and you want to bring in some learning fun, Yeti day is perfect! For this day, we learned all about the Abominable Snowman (or Yeti) with some great books, videos, and awesome crafts and puzzles! Click here to check out full details of the day!
DAY EIGHT: Chupacabra Day
Okay, so the Chupacabra may not be the creature you think of as adorable and fun loving but slowly and surely this mythical creature is making its way into some kid books and videos. Fair warning – this day does touch on some of the scarier aspects of this mythical creature (in addition to some of the cute kid books released). Click here to check out full details of the day!
DAY NINE: Bigfoot Day
Is bigfoot an enormous scary monster lurking in the woods OR just a misunderstood, soft-hearted creature? For this day, learned all about big foot, measured out how large their footprints would make, and created some adorable big foot crafts and blocks! Click here to check out full details of the day!
DAY TEN: Pegasus Day
Is it a horse? Is it a unicorn? It’s a Pegasus! For this day, we learned all about the mythical Pegasus who has captured so many imaginations and inspired so many other stories! Click here to check out full details of the day!
FINISH OFF THE WEEK!
Now, since all of these creatures are mythical or legendary, one (likely) can’t just visit a museum or zoo to see them. (There are, in fact, some museums that have had some mythical creature temporary exhibits, so hopefully you’re lucky enough to visit!). BUT, there are no shortage of movies that would make for a great mythical creature movie night!
