Amazing Time Traveling Adventures – a Medieval History Week

Welcome to our “Time Travelling Adventures – A Medieval History Week” – an at home week filled with days of relaxed learning and fun activities all themed to the wondrous medieval era! Young knights, squires, princes, and princesses will hardly realize their learning all about history as they embark on a journey of bringing the Middle Ages to life!

For this week, we traveled back in time by first creating the ultimate learning medieval space by decorating it with castle backdrops and cardboard play castles! Then we – of course – had to pick a few of the things that kids would undoubtedly think of first when you say medieval times – castles & knights! Rather than simple imaginative play, we learned about the true use of castles and the life of a knight. Then we moved onto daily life with medieval feasts and fare & craft guilds! And finally we ended the week with a very brief introduction to the Wars of the Roses.

Read through to check out our ideas on ways to decorate your camp area, find links to fun & educational videos, books – fiction and non-fiction, writing prompts or story telling ideas, science experiments, food crafts & snacks, and kid-friendly crafts all themed for the week!

DAY ONE: An Introductory Day

Like most of our at home camp weeks, we kicked off the week by easing into the topic.  For our first day, we brought out all our medieval decorations from various parties and imaginative play days! Then we created a few ‘stained glass’ pieces to set around the windows. And finally, we talked about the medieval times are a piece in history with some similarities to the medieval imagery they’re familiar with (minus the dragons and unicorns)!! DAY TWO: Castle Day

One can hardly think of Medieval Times without images of glorious castles coming to mind! For this day, we learned all about castles: how and why they were made, what happened in castles.  Then we created a few of our own!  Click here to check out full details of the day!

DAY THREE: Knight Day

Another kid-favorite of the medieval times needed an entire day – brave and loyal knights! For this day, we learned all about knights & how to become one!  And we, of course, left some time for pretend play with our newly crafted cardboard shields and foam swords 🙂 Click here to check out full details of the day!

DAY FOUR: A Day in the Life

After learning all about castles and knights, one naturally starts to wonder what everyone did on a day to day basis during the middle ages!  While there are multiple time periods and different classes, all with different answers to those questions, we focused a bit more on food and crafts (as in crafts of the middle ages). Click here to check out full details of the day!

DAY FIVE: Wars of the Roses

For this day, our older ones wanted to tackle the Wars of the Roses. Though quite complex, we tried to simplify it as much with videos, drawing out family trees, and books.  We also threw in a few rose-themed crafts just for fun.  Click here to check out full details of the day!

FINISH OFF THE WEEK

All that medieval immersion and one can’t help but want to dine in a medieval feast or try your hand at some medieval games! If you’re fortunate enough to live near a Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament, it’s definitely worth checking out! It can be a bit pricey but pair it with a celebration of a special occasion & you’ve got a wonderful medieval experience ahead of you! Another great option (though not exactly historically accurate) is a Renaissance Faire or reenactment – check if your area has one – RenList! Again, technically Renaissance and Medieval Times are different time periods but the point of a Renaissance Faire is fun & enjoyment, so quite a few time periods and fantasy worlds mix at these fairs – grab some turkey legs, play some archery, and shop for some medieval-like clothing!

If a trip to a medieval setting isn’t in the cards for you, you can always cap off the week with an awesome movie (or binge watching series) night! There are quite a few ‘King Arthur’ movies for kids: Sword in the Stone, The Kid Who Would Be King, etc… as well as a few ‘medieval-like’ movies with fantasy twists like dragons or unicorns!

And finally, throw a medieval themed party – click here to check out ours!!! And if you’re not too strict on excluding the fantasy aspect that comes with a lot ‘medieval’ type parties, check out a few of our other parties: A Sizzling Dragon Themed Party and The Ultimate Dragon Party – Save the Dragons!!
