DECORATIONS
For our decorations, we used some of our How to Train Your Dragon toys: Toothless Stuffed Animal and How to Train Your Dragon Mini Figurines.
For our entryway and great photo-spot, rather than purchase a specific “How to Train Your Dragon” backdrop, we re-used a dragon-themed one from a previous party: Flying Dragon Wonderland. Just in front of the backdrop, we set up a Cardboard Playhouse Castle – there are some more decorative ones but we opted for this plain one so the kids could get imaginative coloring and designing it. It’s pretty large, so if you color the whole thing, you might need several boxes of crayons or markers (or paint if you’re brave enough to let kids go crazy with paintbrushes!). We set up a few different boxes along with some decorative dragon figurines. It was also large enough that the little ones could go in and out and play around it! Tons of fun!
For our table, we purchased How to Train Your Dragon tableware, which helped immediately set the theme. We also added some mini dragon figurines and clean rocks around each table setting. For the centerpiece, we created a mini volcano and added the dragon figurines around it.
FOOD & DRINKS
With a few clever labels, you can make most foods feel like they’re dragon-themed 🙂 Though we didn’t create any labels specific for this party, we did have some from another Dragon Party that would work here as well. Feel free to check out and use for your own purposes: Dragon Party Labels & Images and Dragon Party Food Table.

CRAFT TABLE
A craft or activity table works great during a party – it’s a low-key way to keep kiddos entertained while there aren’t any party games or snacks served. Though we already had our massive cardboard castle to color, we also had a few other crafts and activities laid out:
- Dragon Suncatchers. We were lucky enough to pick these up from the Dollar store. There was just enough paint in each kit for the entire craft so there wasn’t a need to supplement. It was a nice, easy activity to just spread out on a table
- Viking Swords and Shields: DIY Shields and DIY Swords
- Dragon Masks: We had a collection of Felt Dragon Masks as well as some How to Train Your Dragon Masks.
ACTIVITIES
- Dragon and Viking Tug of War! – For this game, we played a regular old tug of war with a ‘How to Train Your Dragons’ twist. We had a side of Vikings (with the shields they designed on their arms) and a side of dragons (with the masks they picked from the table).
- Dragon Race – This game is modeled after the dragon races where the characters have to round up some sheep. For this game, we hid a TON of printed out paper sheep around the party area and had the kids find as many as possible!
- Sheep Toss – For this game we had some sheep (white pom pom snowballs from our winter parties) and a few baskets laid out around an “obstacle course” (walking on a long strip of tape without falling, jumping through hula hoops, etc). Each kid took a turn going through the obstacle course trying to pick up a “sheep” and toss it into the closest basket.
- Dragon Egg Piñatas! What would a party be without piñatas! (We re-use this balloon piñatas method for several parties because it’s so easy and inexpensive – you just have to plan ahead as it takes a few days to dry and paint. Inside the piñatas, we had some candy and dragon stickers 🙂
GOODIE BAGS
For our goodie bags, we had some typical treats and candy but also added in a few How to Train Your Dragon Mini Figurines as well as some regular Dragon Figurines in each bag. Everyone also got to take home any crafts they had made throughout the party!
