Tagged Tags: , ,

Looking for a quick & easy learning fun activity for your littles around the Holidays? Coloring flowers is a great way to show kids how water travels through a flower & you get beautifully colored flowers in a just few days! As a seasonal Holiday twist, color them to match your Holiday decorations (greens & reds, whites & blues, etc..) then cleverly place a few other decorations around your flowers, and you’ve got a beautiful easy decoration! Read on to check it out.

WHAT YOU NEED

THE SUPPLIES

  • White Flowers (Carnations, Roses, and Daises all work well. We used mini white roses in this activity)
  • Vase, upcycled jars, or containers (to hold the water)
  • Food Coloring (Holiday Colors: Greens & Reds, White & Blues, etc…)

THE EXPERIMENT

We’ve done this experiment a few times but originally found it on the Steve Spangler site: Colorful Carnations. The instructions are clear & there’s also a description of the science if you’re using this as a learning activity.

Since we’re using this for Holiday Decorations, we opted for the traditional Holiday Colors: red and green. Since red roses are quite easy to find, we opted to just dye our mini roses green.

THE FINISHED PRODUCT

Now that you’ve got beautifully colored holiday flowers, add them into a vase or upcycled jar. Then add optionally add any other holiday or winter decorations you may have around the house!

We used our newly dyed green flowers and added them to store-bought red ones to create the traditional red/green color scheme 🙂 We added a mini wreath and a few miniature winter craft items around the vase (upcycled jar 😉 ) as well.
