DRAGONS! DRAGONS! DRAGONS! Who doesn’t love them! If you’ve seen any of our other posts, you’ll know we have quite a fondness for these mythical creatures and have MANY Dragon Themed Parties and Days of Learning Fun & Play! For this party, we had a ton of easy & low prep ideas including a quest to save the dragons! Read on for more!
DECOR
We set the mood with a medieval look & feel- we used a few of the Color Your Own 3D Castles (12) (set out at the craft table) and had our own kiddos color a few beforehand. We set these up around the party.
If you can’t find any Stone Table Cloths or they’re out of budget, you can always use a plain gray plastic one as well.
We had a few backdrops ( Castle Entrance Backdrop, Castle Window Insta-View, agic Forest Vintage Medieval Castle Background) around the house where guests could also take pictures.
ACTIVITY TABLE(S)
We typically set up an activity table for kids to keep entertained while everyone arrives AND after all the games are done. These activities are simple and easy and typically don’t require too much supervision.
We had a few printouts (word search, coloring pages) to keep kids entertained while the rest of the group arrived but also had a craft table set up.
- We had a bead table with a few Dragon Pendant Charms (20 pieces) where the kids could create necklaces or bracelets to take home.
- We also had a few Color Your Own 3D Castles (12) that kids could color.
- We also had a separate table for a few puzzles (Ravensburger 12911 Mountains of Mayhem 200 Piece Puzzle for Kids, Land of Dragons – 36 Piece Jigsaw Floor Puzzle) that the guests could do together. We’ve found that anything over 200 pieces might be a bit time consuming for the entire party but generally with 200 or less and a few guests chipping in (parents included) the puzzle is solved by the end of the party. We also had an easier 36 piece one for the younger crowd.
FOOD & DRINKS
Appetizers:
- Dragon fire balls (cheese balls)
- Dragon claws (bugles)
- Dragon tears (pomegranate seeds)
Main Course:
- Giant Turkey Legs (of course!) — no napkins allowed!
- For those with fainter hearts, smaller chicken drumsticks and wings were also on the menu 🙂
Dessert:
- Dragon Birthday Cake. We actually used the idea from kidfriendlythingstodo and created our dragon birthday cake using their structure: Candy Castle Fortress (kidfriendlythingstodo.com). We decorated the cake with a number of (cleaned dragon figurines: Amazon – 2.5 – 3inch Mini Dragons (Set of 20) on top of the cake and around.
Drinks:
- Any fun colored kool-aid or juice
GAMES
We sent the kids on “a quest” to save the dragon eggs. We showed them one of the dragon puzzle eggs (Amazon – Dragon Puzzle Egg) and told them there was an entire nest hidden somewhere in the “Kingdom” but an evil wizard had taken them. The group had to
- Step One: the group needed to be thoroughly prepared for their quest and needed proper armor. We had them “design” their own DIY Shields, DIY Swords, and DIY Knight Masks. Some of our kids blew through this quite quickly and others took quite a bit of time on it, so it might make sense to give them a set time (10-15 min or so?) depending on the group. You may find some similar games/themes in our Princes and Knights Party, but here we had them color their own shields, knight masks, and swords.
- Step Two: If they found other dragon eggs to save, they should add those to their bags (you can splurge on a set of Drawstring Bags (20 pieces) or just use a favor or paper bag for each kid). For this part of the quest, we used regular plastic Easter eggs and added a few to some makeshift 4in Nest from Michael’s. We made sure that each ‘nest’ only had one ‘golden’ **cough cough** yellow **cough cough** egg which had a clue to their next task. The first nest, of course, was quite obvious as it “magically appeared” in front of their eyes as we lifted a small blanket that was covering the nest. It’s imaginative play, right?? 🙂
- Depending on how large your group is or how old they are, you can vary the # of nests/eggs it takes to get to their final destination. Our clues were your standard ‘around the house’ treasure hunt clues – We had grandiose ideas of making clues that were more themed, but those went by the wayside… Maybe we’ll add them at a later date, but they did have fun!
- Final Step: The “Dragon Nest”. For this final step, there was a “larger nest” (which was really just a cardboard box as these eggs were a bit bigger) BUT it was guarded by an evil wizard (pull string pinata). The kids had to “defeat” the wizard before they could get to the nest of Dragon Puzzle Eggs.
GOODIE BAGS
If you want to keep in theme when you’re guests leave, sprinkle in some dragon or medieval themed items for their goodie bag along with any of the regular candy or hand outs you want to give out.
- We had purchased of few bags of the 3inch Mini Dragons (Set of 20) and added a couple to each goodie bag
- Each guest went home with one of the Dragon Puzzle Egg as well.
