WHAT YOU’LL NEED
THE SUPPLIES:
- A square shaped book to give.
- A small box or Paper Mache Circle Box (We used this one from Michaels: Paper Mache Medium Circle Box)
- Black Tissue Paper (or the colors of your graduate’s robes)
- Yarn (this will be for the tassel, so any color that you’d like to add)
- Blank circle label or sticker (optional)
THE TOOLS
- Scissors
- Tape
STEPS
STEP 1: Select the Supplies
The Main Gift will be the book. There’s a great article by coolmompicks.com with suggestions on graduation books beyond the standard “Oh the Places You’ll Go” by Dr. Seuss. We found this book in that article along with a few other very sweet books. Check it out here: 12 inspirational books for graduation gifts, beyond Oh, the Places You’ll Go!
You can optionally place an item in the small box as well (a mug box works well here too). We used the circle box so we could add a gift card in there but feel free to add anything – candy, small books, jewelry, etc. Rather than filling with tissue paper, we also used one of our extra graduation napkins from our table setting (as a bit more festive then just plain black tissue 😉
STEP 2: Wrap the Book
Using the tissue paper you selected, wrap the book as you’d wrap any present.
STEP 3: Wrap the Box or Cylinder.
Using the tissue paper you selected, wrap the box/circle as you’d wrap any present. (For the circle, pull the tissue toward the center and tape down). Don’t worry if the side you’re taping looks messy – this goes underneath the book anyway. If the sides are sticking out too much, you can also tape them down.
STEP 4: Create the ‘Mortarboard’ or Hat.
Position the box underneath the book in the center (if you have a ‘nicer’ looking side for the book, use that for the top and connect the box to the side that’s not as nice looking). You may need a few pieces of tape to ensure the book and box stay connected.
STEP 5: Create the Tassel
Follow the steps in the DIY Tassel Tutorial here.
STEP 6: Attach the Tassel
Optionally using your circle sticker OR tape, take the loop and attach it to the middle of the mortarboard. If you’re using regular tape to attach the tassel, you can also cut out a small circle out of your tissue paper and place it over the tassel.
STEP 7: The Finished Product
You now have a graduation gift that doubles as a decoration for your celebration!
