It’s a Sweet Life: An Amazing At Home Candy Week

Welcome to our “It’s a Sweet Life – Candy Week” – an at home week filled with days of relaxed learning and kid-approved fun activities all themed to the oh-so-fun sweets and treats!  Who doesn’t love a sweet treat??? But, while we may all know which chocolate bar is our favorite or which ice cream flavor is the best, do we know where these yummy delights came from or how they’re made?

For this week, we nibbled on the history, cool facts, and science fun on several types of sweets: chocolate, ice cream, maple syrup, honey, pop rocks, and cotton candy! And of course, we had samplings to enjoy each day! After all, what better way to get the little ones to keep learning than to pick something they LOVE – sugar and sweets!  We had soooo much fun with this theme that we added a few more days to make it SEVEN days of Sweet Themed Learning Fun instead of just five 🙂

Read through to check out our ideas on ways to decorate your camp area, find links to fun & educational videos, books – fiction and non-fiction, writing prompts or story telling ideas, science experiments, food crafts & snacks, and kid-friendly crafts all themed for the week!

DAY ONE: An Introductory Day

Like most of our at home camp weeks, we kicked off the week by easing into the topic.  For our first day, we learned about candy and its history. Then we decorated the learning area with some sweet treat sticker sheets, candy backdrops, and cute bulletin board decorations. We also brought out the Candy Land game for some extra added fun during free time! Click here to check out full details of the day!

DAY TWO: Chocolate Day

What would a candy week be without a day devoted to CHOCOLATE – definitely a great start to a Sweet Treat Filled Week!!!! For this day, dove a bit deeper into the history of chocolate with books and videos, crafted some chocolate and chocolate-themed items, and tried out some fun colored chocolate experiments! DAY THREE: Ice Cream Day

One can hardly think of a better summer treat than iconic ice cream! For this day, we also dove a bit deeper into the history of ice cream with some books and videos (as well as investigating the so-called “brain freeze”). We also created some easy and fun crafts and creative stories. To finish off, we had a taste of astronaut ice cream and made our own homemade ice cream made in an ice cream in a bag experiment! Click here to check out full details of the day!

DAY FOUR: Maple Syrup Day

Would pancakes and waffles taste just as good without the yummy sweetness of maple syrup??? Arguably not 🙂 For this day, we learned all about the journey from tree to table while also making some adorable (and easy ;)) maple crafts. Click here to check out full details of the day!

DAY FIVE: Honey Day

There is a reason why an adorable cartoon bear can’t stay away from honey – it’s delicious!!! With some many of our foods sweetened with honey, it’s hard not devote a whole day to this sweetness! For this day, snacked on quite a few of our favorite honey treats while reading all about honey, where it comes from, and how it’s made. Click here to check out full details of the day!

DAY SIX: Pop Rocks Day

One taste of this fizzing, popping candy and you won’t be able to go back! Pop Rocks Day was by request, so we could not say no 🙂 For this day, we learned a bit about the history and spent most of the day performing experiments and some crafts using this sugary treat. Click here to check out full details of the day!

DAY SEVEN: Cotton Candy Day

This one was also added by popular demand – maybe just so the little ones could get more cotton candy – Cotton Candy Day 🙂 With it’s swirls and melt in your mouth goodness, this one was a great add-in for our Sweet Week! For this day, we learned about the origins of cotton candy, how it was invented, how it’s made, and performed quite a few experiments with it! Click here to check out full details of the day!

FINISH OFF THE WEEK!

And last but not least, finishing off the week with a trip to a candy store or museum! If you don’t happen to live near a candy museum, there’s quite a virtual tours of factories that you can take online. OR, cuddle up with some candy themed movies like like Wonka (or older versions as well)!
