Welcome to our “Awesome Amphibians Week” – an at home camp filled with days of relaxed learning and fun activities all themed to amphibians: frogs, salamanders, newts, & more!  While this week may definitely fall into the ‘mixed eagerness’ category, we did manage to get some of even our most anti-anything slimy learners excited about some of these topics 🙂 After all, who doesn’t love the axolotls from Minecraft 🙂

For this week, we started off with a basic introduction on amphibians (with a brief comparison on some of the other creatures they may have lumped into this category). Then we moved on to focus on a different amphibian each day 🙂

Read through to check out our ideas on ways to decorate your camp area, find links to fun & educational videos, books – fiction and non-fiction, writing prompts or story telling ideas, science experiments, food crafts & snacks, and kid-friendly crafts all themed for the week!

DAY ONE: An Introductory Day

Like most of our at home camp weeks, we kicked off the week by easing into the topic. We started off with setting up the camp area by creating our very own make-believe amphibian habitat.   Then we decorated by with a few amphibians that we crafted together. We also spent some time reading and watching videos all on amphibians! Click here to check out full details of the day!

DAY TWO: Fabulous Frogs Day

Many kids have seen a frog either in nature, movies, cartoons, or books, so they should be fairly familiar with what they look like.  But, today, we also concentrated on the frog’s life cycle and other interesting facts! Click here to check out full details of the day!

DAY THREE: Sensational Salamanders

Salamanders may be a bit more unfamiliar to some little ones compared to some other more popular amphibians, but they’ve definitely made appearances in kid cartoons and books (Think WildKratts or the famous Bruni from Frozen 2)!  Our kiddos were surprised they had actually seen a few salamanders as well! Click here to check out full details of the day!

DAY FOUR: Awesome Axolotls

If your little one is an amphibian expert OR a major Minecraft fan, they may already be familiar with these super-cool & amazing amphibians – axolotls!  They’re adorable salamanders that seem to keep their “child-like” features, which sets them a bit apart in appearance from their other types of salamanders! For this day, we read a few non-fiction books, watched some videos, and tried to create some axolotls of our own. Click here to check out full details of the day!

FINISH OF THE WEEK!

If you’re fortunate enough to live close to a nature museum or nature area, you might just be able to see a few amphibians up close! If not, there are some very cool cameras or museum videos that you can find online!

Otherwise, curl up to a good movie like Frog and the Toad!
