Looking for a unique and fun filled party? Whether you’re celebrating the end of Ancient Egypt Unity Study, throwing a bash for a history fan, or just want to add a fun theme to a party, this Ancient Egypt Party is for you! This one is super simple to set up, doesn’t cost much, and may even get everyone talking about their favorite Ancient Egypt stories! Read on to check it out!
DECORATIONS
While you can definitely go all out with store bought Ancient Egypt decorations (Ancient Egypt Decorations, Ancient Egypt Pyramid Backdrop), you can also keep costs low by creating some DIY decorations!
DIY cardboard pyramids are easy to make and don’t cost much – you just need a good box cutter or scissors, some cardboard, tape/glue, and black markers!! (We followed the How to Make a Cardboard Pyramid from NewKey Hack).
Hand-drawn hieroglyphics (using a Hieroglyphics Translator, of course) add a personal touch without spending too much. Using Brown Wrapping Paper or Upcycled Paper Grocery Bags, add any message or phrase with a marker! But, if you’re under a time crunch, a roll of Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphics Wrapping Paper may do the trick 🙂
Spreading around a few figurines from an Ancient Egypt Figurine Toob add a great touch too!
THE PHOTO AREA
Photo backdrops are a great way of setting a theme and double as a nice and easy activity! Pick a backdrop that functions as decorative, add a few props to the scene and you’ve got a great place to hang out!
We did hang up our Egypt Carving Backdrop but later realized some Ancient Egypt Photo Props might have added an extra touch. Either way, the backdrop definitely made for a fun and decorative space 🙂
Note, you don’t have to go all out with a photo backdrop stand either. Grab a few pieces of tape and an empty wall & you’re all set!
THE TABLE
With just a few Ancient Egypt themed items, you can create the perfect party table! We had a simple table with lots of gold and blue: Gold Dinner Plates, Blue Dessert Plates, Blue Napkins. Then we sprinkled some pieces of ‘grass’ (from some Fake Outdoor Plants stems) on top of the plates. We also laid out a few Artificial Lotus Flowers on the table. Both the grass and lotus flowers were similar to plants found in Ancient Egypt.
For each place setting, we also printed out a hieroglyphic alphabet chart onto Vintage Paper. This was both decorative and used later on in a game 🙂
In the center, we placed some of our DIY cardboard pyramids. Around the pyramids and table, we scattered some figurines from the Ancient Egypt Figurine Toob.
PARTY FOOD
No party is complete without some party food! You can always serve some typical (or fancier) party food, but you can also keep in theme with a few clever labels or snacks 🙂
And what better way to celebrate in Ancient Egypt style than to bring out some foods that were eaten in Ancient Egypt! Luckily, what they ate wasn’t too far off from things you can find now – Meat, fish, fruits, beans, and cheeses are all great options!
ACTIVITY TABLE(S)
We typically set up an activity table for kids to keep entertained while everyone arrives AND after all the games are done. These activities are simple and easy and typically don’t require too much supervision.
- Coloring Pages: There are some great printables on Ancient Egyptian Gods by Arty Factory
- Make a Cartouche: Although Cartouche’s are oval, we didn’t get a chance to cut out the shapes from our cardboard pieces. Rather, we let the kids draw out an oval and decorate the inside 😉
- Make an Amulet: There are many different ways to create an amulet but we opted for a simple air dry clay and gold paint method. We had some toothpicks for carving designs into the clay and some smaller figurines for imprints.
GAMES
What’s a party without some fun and memorable games??? Kids will definitely have fun just running around and coming up with their own games, BUT adding in a few themed games will definitely be a hit with your guests! Here were a few of ours.
- Senet. Senet was a popular game in Ancient Egypt that can be played fairly easily today. There are store bought versions (Ancient Egyptian Wooden Board Games) but we went with a printable version: Make and Play Your Own Senet Game by the Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures – University of Chicago. We printed the game on Vintage Paper to give it more of an antique look. For the game pieces, we used Pebbles from the Dollar Tree (you could also use pom poms, beads, coins, etc) and craft sticks). If you have a larger group, you can print out a few more boards and have a tournament!
- Scavenger Hunts. We created some simple “search and find” paper Scavenger Hunts. One version is a simple look and find and another is a look and find with hieroglyphs to decode.
And while we didn’t have these games at our party, you could also add these in for some more party fun.
GIVEAWAYS AND GOODIE BAGS
What’s a party without a few giveaways 🙂 In addition to any crafts they made, a few themed items would be nice to add into a goodie bag:
- Figurines from Ancient Egypt Figurine Toob
- Egyptian Papyrus Paper Bookmarks
- Chocolate Gold Coins
