If you’re looking for a simple but sweet butterfly themed party for your little one that won’t break the piggy bank, we’ve got some great ideas here for you! Try out a few and let us know how it goes in the comments or follow us on pinterest!
Also, if you haven’t already and are looking for more butterfly-themed activates for your budding lepidopterist (yes, that’s a new word I’ve become familiar with, the things you learn from or for your kids, haha :). It’s a person who studies or collects butterflies or moths)…. check out our other posts with more butterfly ideas: All Things Butterflies.
DECORATIONS
For this party, we used a lot of purples, lavenders, and pinks. Our table was decorated mostly in purple and lavender with some purple gems and fancy butterflies for table scatter. We also used the folding technique in one of our other articles – A DIY Flutter of Folded Butterflies – to fold the napkins to give it some extra decor.

We also used costume wings that you can find at the Dollar Store and added them to the backs of our small chairs. These wings actually had a dual purpose – they added some whimsical decor to the party but we also let each child have their own set of ‘butterfly’ wings (if they and parents approved) so they could wear them around the party- instant butterflies! 🙂 Note, ours had glitter on them, so beware with fallen glitter! We also let our little guests take the wings home as part of their ‘favor’ / ‘goodie bag’.
FOOD
We had someone a similar set up to our Fairy Birthday Party where we cut watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew in half then balled the melons and re-used the halves as bowls. The melon balls actually served dual purpose here as well as we let the kids create caterpillars with honeydew (or grapes)
We went with standard party food for the actual main course: pizza and sandwiches, etc..
For the cake, we we used butterfly decorations from Amazon: 11pc Sequin Butterfly Cake Toppers. We actually had a much smaller cake as many of our little guests didn’t like frosting (why not????). We ended up not putting all the toppers on and our birthday girl got to keep the extra sequin butterfly toppers (win win) 😉 .
CRAFTS
For this party, we were a bit more low-key and just had a series of crafts for the kids to do. We used a few of the DIY crafts in our Butterfly Crafts article as well as some purchased craft kits and sticker scenes from our Butterfly Summer Camp.
We had a small table set up with construction paper so the kids could make the same paper butterflies as the napkins (Click here for tutorial). We also let them cut up the paper so they could make different sizes.
We also talked a little bit about monarch butterflies and tried out this milkweed seed bomb tutorial: Milkweed Seed Bombs 101 from saveourmonarchs.org. We let the kids take them home so they could plant them for the butterflies!
Also, since we planned on letting them keep all their crafts, we had some medium sized canvas bags that they could draw on. We let them draw whatever they wanted but gave some suggestions for kids who needed a bit more direction (e.g. draw a big butterfly, draw the butterfly cycle, draw a butterfly family, etc…) You can find plain white canvas bags at most craft stores and online. We used these from Oriental Trading: DIY Large White Tote Bags – they’re not the strongest but they could hold all the light crafts we sent them home with.
GOODIE BAGS
We did add in some butterfly necklaces and butterfly fans to their goodie bags but otherwise kept things small and simple since we were sending them home with wings and all their crafts.
