A Quick, Easy, Inexpensive DIY Tassel
Tagged Tags: ,

There are quite a few articles out there on creating fancy tassels, but we just created a simple one here to do the job.

While tassels can be added to just about anything, if you’re creating this for a mortarboard, and are looking for a few more ideas on graduation, please feel free to check out our other articles on party guides, printables, and other DIY crafts: Graduation Ideas!

Before we begin, let’s take a step back and talk about the parts of the tassel. I’ll be using some of this terminology throughout the article, so just wanted to make sure we’re all talking about the same thing 🙂

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

SUPPLIES

  • Yarn (in the color of your choosing)

TOOLS

  • Scissors

STEPS

Step 1: Cut several pieces of yarn.

For this tutorial, I used 10 pieces of yarn (so folded in half, we get about 20 pieces for the fringe). If you want your fringe to look fuller, cut a few more pieces. The yarn should generally be about the same size, but it doesn’t have to be perfect. You can cut the ends once your finished to make sure everything is aligned.

Step 2: Create the cord.

Cut out a smaller piece of yarn and lay it perpendicularly to the middle of the rest of the yarn.

Fold the rest of the yarn over the single yarn piece and tie the single yarn piece at the other end to close the loop.  Cut the excess yarn, so you have a clean loop. Optionally move the portion with the knot towards the other yarn pieces (this will hide that small knot and make the loop look smoother).

Using the fringe yarn, make a knot where the fringe meets the cord.

Step 3: Create the body

Cut a smaller piece of yarn and tie it about an inch or so from the folded end of the yarn – this will give it that tassel look.  You can optionally add in a charm here.

Tie the small piece of yarn and cut the excess. This will complete the body.
