THE SUPPLIES:

  • Brown Construction Paper (about 6-7 Sheets)
  • Twine

THE TOOLS

  • Scissors
  • Ruler (optional)

STEPS

STEP 1: Cut the Paper

If you’re using this as a measurement activity, have the children measure out the the middle of the construction paper (lengthwise).   Then have them draw a line and cut the construction paper in half.  (You’ll be able to make 2 haystacks – 1 with each set).   A good pair of scissors should be able to cut through all the sheets.  Otherwise, you can repeat as necessary.   If you’re not using this activity for learning fun, eyeball it 😉

Once you have your sets of halves, place the ruler in the middle of the paper (also lengthwise) and cut a slit to the ruler (roughly a little over an inch).  Repeat evenly (the width between the cuts will determine how thick the hay is).  If you’re using for a learning craft, measure out the distance between each cut and make them equal.

STEP 2: Roll the Paper

Starting at one end, start rolling the paper until you finish the length.  Then tie the middle together with twine.

STEP 3: Finish it Up

Fluff the top and bottom so that they stick out a bit.  Then optionally add in a few other autumn decorations around it 🙂
